The Odyssey of Sea Turtles

A new visiting area covering 550m²

Discover the great adventure of sea turtles at this new open-air space of the Oceanographic Museum, learn about their life-cycle and the threats to their existence, the magic of egg-laying and the actions taken to ensure their protection in this brand new area spanning 550 m². This unique area consolidates dialogue with all our target audiences (visitors, researchers, decision-makers and pupils) and gives visitors an opportunity to discover, share and get involved in the life of sea turtles. To accompany the opening of this new area, there is a themed exhibition on the first floor of the Museum.

They shared the Earth with the dinosaurs, witnessed the birth of Homo Sapiens and their longevity has fascinated many civilisations. Today, however, sea turtles are threatened by extinction.
Over the last three decades, a collapse in most of their populations
has been observed worldwide. This is unfortunately not unrelated to Man...
In Monaco, in collaboration with the French Mediterranean Sea Turtles Network (RTMMF), we have been taking in injured or sick turtles for years now. In 2019, we achieved a new milestone with the opening of a dedicated awareness area. This area is symbolic of our strong and enduring commitment, matched by our ambition to draw people’s attention to this fascinating animal.
If you are interested in the future of sea turtles, get involved and help us save them.

Partnership between the Oceanographic Institute and Compagnie Monégasque de Banque renewed

Renewal was the obvious choice

Since 2010, CMB has provided sponsorship to support the Oceanographic Institute’s mission of getting people to “know, love and protect the oceans”. The partnership agreement has now been renewed for 2019 between the two institutions, represented by Messrs Etienne Franzi and Werner Peyer, Chairman and Deputy Administrator of CMB respectively, and Robert Calcagno, Managing Director of the Oceanographic Institute.

CMB’s presence alongside the Oceanographic Institute marks our firm’s commitment, which dates back numerous years, to tackling environmental and climate issues. The partners we choose are always in line with those chosen by the Principality. Thanks to the latter, we can work together with the Institute to preserve the planet and the oceans.

Compagnie Monégasque de Banque is a faithful and committed partner and contributes to organising mediation campaigns with the target audience of the Institute in order to raise awareness and persuade as many people as possible to get involved in protecting the ocean and its biodiversity. Thanks to this financial support, the Institute can spread its message around even more widely.

Beginning in spring, the partnership will take the form of the involvement of Compagnie Monégasque de Banque in the implementation and running of a programme of educational workshops aimed devoted to sea turtles. In spite of their popularity and status as protected species, sea turtles are threatened at every stage of their development. By providing its support, CMB is thus looking to contribute towards saving these emblematic animals by making young people more aware of their vulnerability.

The Oceanographic Institute is delighted with this long-term collaboration, which bears witness to the
hared philosophy uniting these two institutions: the philosophy of a more sustainable future.

TER SNCF and the Oceanographic Museum are taking action for ecomobility

Partnership between TER SNCF and the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco renewed

Ecomobility: an experience to share as a family in order to combat climate change

To promote the development of ecomobility, TER SNCF and the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco are renewing their partnership, encouraging families to opt for train travel when coming to the Museum.

Train tickets for a return journey from stations in Alpes-Maritimes to Monaco will therefore also grant entry to the Oceanographic Museum.

Taking the train rather than the car is an effective energy choice to fight climate change.

A meeting organised at the initiative of the Princely Government and the Oceanographic Institute

Raising awareness for the protection of turtles

On initiative from the Princely Government and the Oceanographic Institute, over forty users of the sea met up today at the Oceanographic Museum to attend and participate in an awareness meeting in favour of protecting sea turtles.

Backup from users of the sea

As the brand-new Monegasque Center for Marine Species Care (CMSEM) enters its operational phase, divers, yachtsmen, fishermen, habormasters and other regular users of the Monaco waters were present to learn best practices in the even of an encounter with a sea turtle.

After touring the treatment centre and its facilities, now ready to welcome its first patients, the participants learned about the rules for intervening and for handling turtles. Knowing when a sea turtle is in distress, using best practices when handling it and informing the specialised networks are all links in the chain of raising the alert.

We are delighted that the CMSEM is now operational and to see the enthusiasm it is generating from Monaco stakeholders involved in protecting the ocean. It is an important tool for the Principality of Monaco and the campaigns it organises in favour of the environment. With this new centre, we are very clearly committing to a collaborative dynamic; on the one hand, there is the network of treatment centres in the Mediterranean perimeter that we are consolidating, and on the other, there is a collective of sea users committed to working with us.

Sea turtles - a source of concern

This mobilisation morning was also the opportunity to review the biology of sea turtles, the threats posed to their existence and the preventive measures carried out by stakeholders of the Principality – inspired by the observation programme led by ACCOBAMS, the ban on single-use plastic products imposed by the Princely Government and even the BeMed programme initiated by the Prince Albert II Foundation.

The Great Medals
Albert I 2019

Great medals Albert I 2019

At a time when the health of the ocean is under threat – from pollution, overfishing and all kinds of excesses – initiatives to improve knowledge and management of our blue planet are multiplying. The Oceanographic Institute, Albert I, Prince of Monaco Foundation honours the great names of the marine world who, through their commitment and their work, contribute to making the Ocean known, loved and protected.

The winners of the Albert I Grand Medal were awarded this Thursday, November 7, 2019 at the Oceanographic Museum :

– Mr Ban Ki-Moon, in the MEDIATION section

Former Secretary General of the UN, at the origin of the creation of the Sustainable Development Goal n° 14 on the Ocean. Secretary General of the United Nations from 2007 to 2016, he made environmental protection one of the priorities of the actions carried out on an international scale, in particular with the implementation of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development including the 17 SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals). Today, through his Foundation, he participates in the development of citizen projects around the world.

If we are to achieve the UN's development and climate change goals, we need to develop global partnerships, including the active participation of governments, NGOs, the private sector, civil society groups and other stakeholders. This is especially true for the sustainability of our oceans.

– Pr. Lisa Ann Levin, in the SCIENCE section

Oceanographer, author and co-founder of the Deep-Ocean Stewardship Initiative (DOSI) Biological oceanographer, she studies the impact of climate change on benthic communities in deep and shallow water environments. Through important work, it seeks to highlight the need for the political, technological and economic sectors to work together with scientists in order to better consider the impacts of human activity on marine environments.

AN AWARD-WINNING THESIS

In order to support new generations of researchers – whose work is related to the ocean – the Oceanographic Institute has awarded a Thesis Prize. The winner received a grant of 3,000 euros to continue her research.

– Drs. Violaine Pellichero for her thesis: “Study of surface layer dynamics and surface/ocean interactions in the Southern Ocean under sea ice”.

On stage, Dr. Violaine Pellichero presented and popularized, through a dynamic presentation of less than 3 minutes, her research work presenting the role of freshwater exchanges in the evolution of the buoyancy of the mixed layer under the ice and its impact on the large-scale overturning circulation.
