THANKS TO YOUR DONATIONS, LET'S LIVE THE OCEAN!

The Oceanographic Institute was created by Prince Albert Iera humanist and visionary prince, who in 1906 created a public utility foundation dedicated to the Ocean. Since then, she has is working to to make it better understood, to make people perceive the challenges we face, cultivate a sense of wonder about marine lifeto stimulate creativity and initiative, and to prepare for the future. the future. Today, theToday, we need as many people as possible to continue our centennial mission!

Because the health of the ocean, nature, humans and animals is interdependent, it is becoming urgent to make the right choices to reverse the devastating processes and ensure a more sustainable future. In the current ordeal, we feel more than ever the importance of our mission, the need to create a link between us all to mobilise the community around the Ocean.

The current crisis, which has forced the closure of the Oceanographic Museum in Monaco and the Maison des Océans in Paris, has severely affected our revenues, 70% of which depend on ticketing and event rentals, activities that have been suspended for over 60 days.

Exhibition "In the heart of the coral" by David Doubilet

4 EXHIBITIONS TO BE FOUND EXCLUSIVELY IN THE STATIONS OF MARSEILLE, TOULON, CANNES & NICE FROM 15/02 TO 15/04

From 15 February to 15 April 2020, SNCF Gares & Connexions and the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco are presenting four new exhibitions by underwater photographer David Doubilet entitled “Immersed in the heart of the coral” in Toulon , Marseille, Cannes and Nice stations.

With this exhibition in four stations, co-designed by the SNCF Gares & Connexions teams and the Oceanographic Museum in Monaco, the artist David Doubilet is trying to raise awareness. It proposes a visual encounter between visitors to the stations and the coral reefs to reveal the fragile beauty and the tenuous link between Man and the Ocean, in the face of the climate emergency.

These exhibitions in stations are part of the Monaco Oceanographic Museum’s desire to highlight coral reefs in all the preservation and awareness-raising activities it has been carrying out for decades, and which will be particularly present throughout 2020.

THIS SUMMER, LET'S LIVE THE OCEAN!

Program of events from June 29 to August 31, 2020

CORAL REEFS IN THE SPOTLIGHT

INTERACTIVE EXHIBITION “IMMERSION”, FROM 18 JULY

From 18 July, the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco will be playing host to a special guest: the Great Barrier Reef. One of the seven natural wonders of the world, it is revealed in the IMMERSION exhibition. A multimedia device offers visitors the opportunity to experience a dive to meet the emblematic species that inhabit the largest coral ecosystem on the planet. This immersive experience, at the crossroads of contemplation and interaction, engages and educates the public to better protect the marine world.

Thanks to the use of state-of-the-art technology and a real-time projection system, “IMMERSION” allows the audience to interact with an environment that is fictional in its operation, but realistic and naturalistic in its rendering. With an experience centered on the realism of the sensation of diving, the visitor, like a diver during his exploration, observes the evolution of different species that interact with him according to his behavior, his movements and his gestures. The public evolves in a living environment in perpetual movement, where all encounters are possible: from the humpback whale to the carpet shark, from barracudas to fluorescent corals.

The Ocean in 2049 "Health of the Ocean, Health of Man

[Conférence] the ocean in 2049
ocean health, human health

“L’Obs” and the Oceanographic Institute (Albert I Foundation, Prince of Monaco)
invites you to an exceptional meeting with experts, great witnesses and innovators on Wednesday 23 September at 7pm at the Oceanographic Museum in Monaco.

Any reflection on our future leads us to the Ocean. This is where life appeared, where the survival of humanity is at stake. The ocean has always protected us, regulated the Earth’s temperature, absorbed CO2, provided oxygen, supplied us with vital resources and inspired our idea of infinity and time. The vitality of our environment is inseparable from our own health.

This is one of the reminders of the current crisis. It is therefore a good time to rethink our relationship with the Ocean, to better preserve it, to better live in the future.

This meeting is part of the “2049” cycle of “L’Obs” and the Planetary Health Week.

MONACO OCEAN PROTECTION CHALLENGE GRAND FINAL

MONACO OCEAN PROTECTION CHALLENGE" GRAND FINAL ON THURSDAY 9 JULY

The Oceanographic Institute, the Monaco Impact association and the International University of Monaco have organised the first ever international edition of the Monaco Ocean Protection Challenge, which is now open to all students, schools and universities. The Grand Final of this challenge will take place on Thursday, July 9 from 2:30 pm to 5:20 pm in live stream.

Thirteen teams of students from Monaco, France, Italy, Mexico, China and Tunisia took part in the challenge, allowing them to put their professional skills, creativity and commitment at the service of a preserved natural ocean. More than a simple student project, this challenge aims to raise students’ awareness of all the opportunities offered by new forms of economy (circular, collaborative, bio-based, biomimicry, etc.) and the value of a respected environment in a professional context.

Following the health crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the organisation of the Grand Final of the challenge was rethought, using a “mixed” format, online: live via the International University of Monaco’s Youtube channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC2B33w_PHFHhO–oA-lyvXA) as well as in person at the IUM.

The final will be held in the presence of the following jury:

– Robert Calcagno, Director General of the Oceanographic Institute

– Peter Kutemann, Managing Director of Monaco Impact

– Jean-Philippe Muller, Director General of the International University of Monaco

– Leila Eiling, President of the Association of Friends of the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco

– Margareth Hepburn, Managing Director of Hepburn Bio Care

– David Sussmann, President of Pure Ocean Foundation

the oceanographic institute, first official member of the global coalition for biodiversity

the oceanographic institute of monaco, first official member of the global coalition "united for #biodiversity"

On the occasion of World Wildlife Day on 3 March 2020, the European Commission launched a new Global Biodiversity Coalition at the Oceanographic Museum.

With this communication campaign, the Commission is calling for increased action to protect biodiversity, using national parks, aquariums, botanical gardens, zoos, science museums and natural history museums to join forces to raise public awareness of the ecological crisis.

In the current context of a health crisis, it seems more important than ever that mobilization, protection and education actions lead to a public reaction to the dramatic consequences of the biodiversity crisis.

The partnership between the European Commission and the Monaco Oceanographic Institute began in 2017 with the highly successful World aquariums #ReadyToChange to #BeatPlasticPollution Coalition, which brought together more than 200 aquariums in 41 countries to raise awareness of marine litter worldwide.

EUROPEAN WEEK FOR WASTE REDUCTION 2020

The Oceanographic Museum of Monaco, participant in the European Week for Waste Reduction

From November 23 to 27, the Oceanographic Museum will take part in the European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR). The event aims to promote, during the same week, awareness-raising actions on sustainable resource management to move towards zero waste. The main axes of this event are: Reduce, Recycle and Reuse.

Given the current health context, it is impossible to propose, as last year, animations for the general public. On the other hand, it was important for the Museum to continue to be involved in this great waste reduction movement in other ways.

For this purpose, a whole programme of actions has been set up, exclusively for the staff of the Oceanographic Museum in order to maintain their involvement despite this very special period.

The Oceanographic Institute and CFM Indosuez share a common ambition

CFM Indosuez Wealth Management is joining forces with the Oceanographic Institute in the latter’s mission to make people “know, love and protect the oceans”.

Raising awareness, winning over hearts and minds and getting as many people as possible to commit to protecting the ocean and its biodiversity are some of the missions of the Oceanographic Institute to which CFM Indosuez Wealth Management attaches great importance. With the latter’s financial support, the Oceanographic Institute will be able to consolidate even further its ability to distribute elements of knowledge and understanding of the marine world among the general public, economic and political decision-makers, the media and opinion leadership, to argue in favour of protecting that world.

1ST INTERNATIONAL MONACO OCEAN PROTECTION CHALLENGE

1ST INTERNATIONAL ‘MONACO OCEAN PROTECTION CHALLENGE

The Oceanographic Institute, the Monaco Impact Association and the International University of Monaco present the first International Monaco Ocean Protection Challenge, now open to all school and university students.

The aim of this challenge is to allow students to devote their professional skills, their creativity and their commitment to preserving the ocean in its natural state. It is more than a simple student project; it is intended to raise awareness among students of all the opportunities offered by the new forms of economy (circular, collaborative, organic-based, biomimetism, etc.) and the value of respecting the environment in a professional context.

Two types of challenge are proposed:

• An entrepreneurial challenge, “Innovate to Protect the Oceans”: the aim here is to present an innovative concept for a product or service (“business concept”) that would have a positive effect on the ocean. The project must be studied in detail and presented in the form of a business plan with a market potential study, a needs assessments, user tests or surveys any any other relevant data; these projects may, over time, take the form of start-ups.

• An institutional challenge, “Party without Balloons”: as part of an initiative from the Oceanographic Institute and the Princely Government aiming to propose alternatives to releasing plastic balloons, which are extremely harmful to the ocean, into the atmosphere, we encourage groups to imagine how this best practice could be communicated as widely as possible and to come up with alternatives to releasing balloons, in the form of an awareness and communication campaign.
