The Oceanographic Institute of Monaco, first official member of the European Commission's Global Coalition "Unite for #Biodiversity

On the occasion of World Wildlife Day on 3 March 2020, the European Commissioner for the Environment, Virginijus Sinkevicius launched a new Global Biodiversity Coalition at the Oceanographic Museum.

With this communication campaign, the European Commission is calling for increased action to protect biodiversity, calling on national parks, aquariums, botanical gardens, zoos, research centres, science museums and natural history museums to join forces to raise public awareness of the nature crisis.

Today, the Oceanographic Institute of Monaco is proud to announce that it is the first official member of the Global Coalition “Unite for Biodiversity”, adding its voice to the 16 organizations and associations that already support the Coalition’s charter and call on their members around the world.

A context that makes mobilization even more necessary...

In the current context of a health crisis, it seems more important than ever that mobilization, protection and education actions lead to a public reaction to the dramatic consequences of the biodiversity crisis.

Alongside H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco and Monegasque institutions, the Government of Monaco and the Prince Albert II Foundation, the Oceanographic Institute defends biodiversity by federating for the protection of the Ocean to make it known, loved and protected. The Institute of Oceanography promotes major thematic programmes such as jellyfish, sharks, turtles and for the year 2020-2021 coral reefs. These multidisciplinary programmes (exhibitions, public events, publications, conferences and debates, the Monaco Marine Species Care Centre, etc.) raise awareness of the fragility of marine ecosystems, which are so important for the maintenance of life.

An event to launch the global coalition

On 3 March 2020, the European Commissioner for the Environment, Virginijus Sinkevicius, and Inger Andersen, Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme, launched the Global Coalition for Biodiversity at the Oceanographic Museum in the presence and with the involvement of H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco.

Alii summum decus in carruchis solito altioribus et ambitioso vestium cultu ponentes sudant sub ponderibus lacernarum, quas in collis insertas cingulis ipsis adnectunt nimia subtegminum tenuitate perflabiles, expandentes eas crebris agitationibus maximeque sinistra, ut longiores fimbriae tunicaeque perspicue luceant varietate liciorum effigiatae in species animalium multiformes.
