An international decision on waste
On the occasion of World Wildlife Day on 3 March 2020, the European Commissioner for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, Virginijus Sinkevicius launched a new Global Biodiversity Coalition at the Oceanographic Museum. Supported by Inger Andersen, Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme, the ceremony was concluded by H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco.
The strength of Aquariums
This ceremony was an opportunity to highlight the success of the “World aquariums ready to change to beat plastic pollution“, launched in 2017 and in which 212 aquariums from 41 different countries participated to raise awareness of marine litter around the world!
September 28, 2020: The Institute of Oceanography becomes the first official member of the Coalition
With this communication campaign, the European Commission is calling for increased action to protect biodiversity, calling on national parks, aquariums, botanical gardens, zoos, research centres, science museums and natural history museums joined forces to increase public awareness of the nature crisis.
Today, 28 September 2020, the Oceanographic Institute of Monaco is proud to announce that it is the first official member of the Global Coalition “Unite for Biodiversity”, adding its voice to the 16 organizations and associations that already support the Coalition and call their members around the world.

A joint call for clean seas
In light of the many impacts on the marine environment caused by the excessive use of plastics around the world, the European Commission is calling on all national parks, aquariums, botanical gardens, zoos, science museums and natural history museums to join forces and step up their efforts to raise awareness of the need to protect biodiversity. The Oceanographic Institute of Monaco is the first institution to join this global coalition.

Inger Andersen announces that 2020 is to be about protecting the oceans and she leads us to support marine biodiversity with the hashtag #UnitedforBiodiversity.
A message for the future
Virginijus Sinkevicius stressed the importance of protecting and preserving the world’s oceans for future human health and the fight against climate change.
If we are to craft a deal that saves nature, then we will need the public to drive the political change that gets us there. People around the world will need to get behind our efforts to make 2020 the Super Year for Nature.
